Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad responded on Tuesday to proposals made by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan to halt the deadly assault on protest cities, a spokesman for Annan said.

“They did respond. Their responses are being considered,” spokesman Ahmad Fawzi told AFP.

Annan said he had made “concrete” proposals to Assad on ways to halt the bloodshed in Syria and secure humanitarian access to cities where the United Nations says thousands have been killed in the past year. Annan said he had been expecting a response by Tuesday.
The international envoy is expected to make a statement on Wednesday in Geneva.

Annan’s spokesman did not give details of the Syrian response. “We have no other comment for now,” he said.

Dozens killed in Idlib

Meanwhile on the ground, Syrian government forces killed dozens of people in the northern city of Idlib, dumping their bodies in a mosque, while some 22 soldiers died in two separate rebel ambushes, opposition activists said on Tuesday.
