Angelina Jolie joins fight to end statelessness
Tuesday, 4 November 2014U.S. actress Angelina Jolie, along with Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, backed the United Nation’s global campaign to end statelessness, a situation at least 10 million people around the world suffer from, according to the Reuters Thomson Foundation.
The U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) estimates that a child is born stateless every 10 minutes, and has launched the “I Belong” campaign in an effort to end the plight of those without citizenship.
“Statelessness makes people feel like their very existence is a crime,” UNHCR head António Guterres said. “We have a historic opportunity to end the scourge of statelessness within 10 years, and give back hope to millions of people.” (CONTINUED)

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday that 1,300 Free Syrian Army fighters would join Kurds in defending the key Syrian border town of Kobane from an assault by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria militants.
The Syrian Kurds have "accepted 1,300 people from the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and they are holding talks to determine the transit route," Erdogan told reporters in Estonia's capital Tallinn.
Kurdish fighters have been battling ISIS with the help of air-strikes carried out by U.S.-led coalition warplanes. (CONTINUED)

Panetta, who served as Obama’s CIA director and then Secretary of Defense, made those revelations in his new book Worthy Fights: A Memoir of Leadership in War and Peace, which he co-authored with Jim Newton and is set to be published on October 7. Time published an excerpt from the new book, where Panetta argues that maintaining a residual American force in Iraq beyond 2011 could have reined in sectarian violence and prevented the rise of the Islamic State, the focus of the current U.S. military campaign in Iraq and Syria.
U.S. military commanders in the region and the Joint Chiefs of Staff wanted to keep troops lingering in Iraq, wrote Panetta. “But the President’s team at the White House pushed back, and the differences occasionally became heated.” (CONTINUED)

A female Kurdish fighter carried out a suicide bomb attack against jihadists from the Islamic State group outside the embattled Syrian border town of Kobane on Sunday, a monitor said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the woman blew herself up at an ISIS position east of the city, killing a number of jihadists who have surrounded Kobane and are battling to seize it. (CONTINUED)

MINA, Saudi Arabia - Taking aim at Islamic State, Saudi Arabia has mounted a battle for hearts and minds at this year's haj, warning pilgrims that the hardline group is "evil" and seeking to recruit their children to fight in Iraq and Syria.
As millions of pilgrims visited the holiest sites in Islam on the second day of the annual pilgrimage on Saturday, global leaders condemned the fourth beheading of a Westerner by Islamic State insurgents.
Saudi Arabia declared Islamic State a terrorist organization in March and sharply stepped up denunciations of the group after its fighters made rapid territorial gains in Iraq in June.
US-led air strikes on the group has allowed some of the lost territory to be recaptured, but the well-armed militants continue to make gains in Iraq and Syria. Last week, Saudi air force planes pounded militant targets in Syria. (CONTINUED)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Jean-Claude-Duvalier, the self-proclaimed "president for life" of Haiti whose corrupt and brutal regime sparked a popular uprising that sent him into a 25-year exile, died Saturday of a heart attack, his attorney said.
Reynold George said the 63-year-old ex-leader died at his home.
Duvalier, looking somewhat frail, made a surprise return to Haiti in 2011, allowing victims of his regime to pursue legal claims against him and prompting some old allies to rally around him. Neither side gained much support, and the once-feared dictator known as "Baby Doc" spent his late years in relative obscurity in the leafy hills above the Haitian capital. (CONTINUED)
