Pope Francis I: Argentina's Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is new Catholic leader

VATICAN CITY - The Catholic church appointed its first South American leader Wednesday, choosing a conservative with "great compassion": Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires. He will be known as Pope Francis I.

The 76-year-old - also the first Jesuit, and the first non-European pope for more than 1,000 years - was introduced to the world from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in front of tens of thousands gathered in the square below............
