Runner holding Libya's Olympic hopes

 Mohamed Khawaja
In 2010, Khawaja won Libya's first ever gold medal at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Nairobi

Aged just 22, his sub-45s time for the 400m was a personal best, and would have earned him fifth place in the Beijing Olympics

During Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year rule, professional sport was actively discouraged in Libya but, in London this summer, one young athlete hopes to win his country's first Olympic medal.

He may be the fastest man in Libya but Mohamed Khawaja has something of a saunter about him, as he comes towards me at Tripoli's dilapidated Almudmar stadium.
