The regime of President Bashar al-Assad was behind a pair of car bomb attacks which killed 55 people outside a military intelligence complex in the Qazzaz area of Damascus on May 10, newly-leaked documents obtained by Al Arabiya reveal.

The documents are part of some highly-classified Syrian security files obtained by Al Arabiya from opposition sources. The channel said that it has verified and authenticated hundreds of these documents and that it has decided to disclose ones with substantial news value and political relevance.

As political tensions mount between neighboring Syria and Turkey, newly-leaked Syrian intelligence documents obtained by Al Arabiya disclose shocking claims shedding light on the dreadful fate of two Turkish Air Force pilots.

Contrary to what was publically claimed, the documents reveal that the pilots survived the crash, but were later executed by the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad!

The Saudi Arabian deputy foreign minister said on Friday that Security Council inaction on the Syrian civil war gave the Bashar al-Assad regime “a green light” to attack his own people.

Abdul Aziz Bin Abdullah told the U.N. General Assembly on Friday that the al-Assad regime was “in a race against time to accomplish its objectives using the most advanced means of killing and destruction,” according to the Associated Press.

Opposition groups say more than 30,000 people have been killed since the uprising began with street demonstrations 18 months ago. Egypt has sought to engage the Saudis along with Turkey and Iran in finding a path to end the fighting. So far, the Saudis have not participated and Iranian leaders claim they are trying to put together a working group of non-aligned countries.

The number killed in fighting between government and rebel forces, and by assaults on the civilian population, topped 300 and reached 343 according to one count.

World leaders are meeting at the United Nations in New York, but without any sign of consensus on how to bring the violence to an end.

David Cameron, the prime minister, accused Russia and China of having a "terrible stain" of the blood of children on their hands for blocking resolutions at the security council.

He had the support of Egypt's new president, Mohammed Morsi, who urged a stronger sanctions regime on Syria.

Invisible Children Uganda (ICU) was invited to have a booth at the event to display our Mend bags and information on our programs. A lot of visitors were surprised and impressed to learn that we are making such high quality products here in northern Uganda. We think that this is only the beginning.

Members of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps are in Syria providing non-military assistance and Iran may get involved militarily if Syria comes under attack, Reuters cited its commander as saying on Sunday.

The statement is the first official acknowledgement from a senior military commander that Iran has a military presence on the ground in Syria where an uprising has left tens of thousands dead since it began 18 months ago.

Western countries and Syrian opposition groups have accused Iran of providing weapons and expertise to Syrian armed forces and have suspected an Iranian military presence inside the country. Iran has denied this.

Four years ago on September 15, the New York investment bank Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy and the financial collapse of 2008 began.

The economic meltdown wiped out more than $11bn of personal wealth in the US, threw millions out of work, and has already resulted in the foreclosure of more than 10 million homes.

Americans across the political spectrum believe that financial executives should have gone to jail for the practices that led to the collapse, but there have been no significant prosecutions. People & Power investigates why Wall Street has not been held accountable for crimes connected to the deepest recession since the Great Depression.

Two government bodies looked into the causes of the meltdown, the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and the US Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Both made criminal referrals to the Department of Justice.

But the Department did not prosecute executives from mortgage lenders and banks like Washington Mutual, Countrywide, Deutsch Bank and Goldman Sachs for mortgage origination and securitisation practices that were a focus of the panels' work.

Byron Georgiou, who served on the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, says it is "a demonstration of a lack of accountability that is really quite unique in American history".

Chris Swecker, a former assistant FBI director in charge of the Criminal Investigative Division, thinks that the Justice Department has been "timid in approaching prosecutions," and finds it "puzzling".

In order to hold Wall Street accountable, he says: "You have to resource the agencies appropriately, and that really and truly has not been done."

Mustafa al-Sheikh, head of the Free Syrian Army’s (FSA) military council, expects the embattled regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad regime will not last more than another four months and stressed the unity of the armed opposition inside Syria.

“Four months is the maximum time if we take into account the irreversible damages inflicted upon the state army and the deteriorating morale of its officers,” he told Al Arabiya.

“[Toppling the regime] can even take two months,” he added.

Sheikh explained that the FSA, the main armed opposition fighter group in Syria, is becoming more powerful and scoring more victories especially with the state army incapable of operating inside Syrian cities.

“The regime’s army can only attack with warplanes and tanks, but it is now very difficult for ground forces or police patrols to walk around inside the cities with the exception of Damascus,” he said.

Tripoli, 5 September:

Libya’s former spy chief and brother-in-law to deposed leader Muammar Qaddafi has been extradited from Mauritania and has now arrived in Tripoli where he has been transferred to Hadba Al-Khadra prison.

Abdullah Al-Senussi, who is also wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of Crimes Against Humanity, was arrested in Mauritania in March, having previously fled to Morocco following the collapse of the Qaddafi regime last year.

“Senussi was flown into Metiga airbase early this afternoon and transferred by helicopter to Hadba Al-Khadra prison”, said Colonel Mohammed Gwaider, the prison governor.

Hadba Al-Khadra also holds a number of other prominent former regime members, including Abuzeid Dorda, Qaddafi’s former external intelligence chief, and Baghdadi Al-Mahmoudi, his former prime minister.

(CNN) -- When a slow-motion massacre has unfolded over the course of 15 months, it's easy to lose the world's attention. But even the most jaded gasped in horror as news emerged of the latest carnage inflicted on the Syrian people. The images from the town of Houla defied belief.

Forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad went on a systematic killing spree, murdering at least 108 people. Most shockingly, the killers targeted women and children. A U.N. representative said the victims included 49 children who were younger than 10. The al-Assad regime denied it carried out the atrocities, but U.N. officials said they saw clear evidence that the Syrian government was involved in the attacks.

Why would a regime, even a brutal dictatorship, send its thugs to kill women and children, even babies? Does it make any sense, even by the twisted logic of armed conflict and tyranny?

The United States urged Syria on Friday to confirm it is detaining an American freelance journalist who has been missing in the country for more than two weeks.

Austin Tice, 31, is believed to be held by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to The Washington Post and McClatchy Newspapers, who called this week for his release.

“We have seen news reports that Mr Tice in Syrian custody,” said Patrick Ventrell, a State Department spokesman.

“However, the Syrian government has yet to confirm these reports with our protecting power. We urge the Syrian government to respond... as soon as possible.”

Ventrell said Washington was “concerned” about Tice’s safety and well-being, and was working through the Czech mission, which has overseen US interests in Syria since the US embassy was closed in February, to get information about the reporter's location and well-being.
