Syrian opposition forces in the northern province of Aleppo have declared the formation of a “Revolutionary Transitional Council” as future umbrella for all the rag tag opposition groups battling to bring down the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
“[The Revolutionary Transitional Council] includes all those working in the revolution; civilians, politicians and military men,” one member of the newly formed council said in a statement aired by Al Arabiya television on Friday.
The council aims to “facilitate the formation for a [wider] national transitional council to include all of the Syrian provinces,” the statement added.

“In a time when the Syrian revolution has reached an advanced stage, there needs to be an incubator inside Syrian territory to lead the revolution from the inside.”

While the main Syrian opposition group, the Syrian National Council, has a military section, many of its political leaders and figures are living abroad, and their meetings happen to be outside the country in Turkey, France or Germany.

“The council is a pioneering example for other provinces to follow.”

PHONY FROM THE BEGINNING?: Qaddafi was in bed when swept to power, says former Libya premier

Muammar Qaddafi was in bed, away from the fighting during Libya’s 1969 revolution, said former Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Salam Jalloud in a Tuesday interview that revealed a number of unknown details on how the late leader swept to power.

“Colonel Qaddafi was in his bed, away from the areas of conflict,t when the 1969 revolution took place,” Jalloud told Al Arabiya’s Political Memory program.

Jalloud explained that on the eve of the coup that would allow him to hold the country for over four decades, until a civil war deposed him last year, Qaddafi pretended to be plotting with other officers. But, the Colonel in fact went home and slept, Jalloud said.

“That is why the first revolutionary declaration was delayed. We had to wait for him to show up in the square,” Jalloud said.

Jalloud added that the revolutionaries were planning to make it a Libyan people’s revolution, but Qaddafi insisted on militarizing the action.

WHERE'S THE UN AND OBAMA? More than 300 bodies found in Syrian town of Darya

More than 300 bodies were found on Saturday in the town of Darya outside the Syrian capital Damascus a day after it was retaken by the Syrian army, opposition activists said, accusing President Bashar al-Assad's forces of mass summary executions.

Local activists said most bodies were found in houses and basement shelters of residential buildings and appear to have been shot dead by troops who had stormed the premises.

Syrian forces had launched a deadly assault in the southwestern belt of Damascus on Saturday, in what activists said was a new bid to crush “once and for all” the insurgency in the capital.

Brandon Darby discusses 2008 RNC Welcoming Committee and Plans for 2012 - YouTube

25 Aug 2012, 3:09 AM PDT

Yesterday, I interviewed my co-worker Brandon Darby as he was traveling toward the Republican National Convention in Florida. The interview focused on strategies used by anarchist protesters at the 2008 Republican National Convention and how those strategies will be used once again next week by the Occupy movement.

In addition to trying to shut down bridges to prevent delegates from reaching the convention center next week, Brandon has learned that a subgroup of Occupy is looking to shut down EMS communications throughout the city.

The video that goes along with this interview is one Brandon took at the RNC convention while working undercover for the FBI in 2008. Some of it is a bit jumpy, but you'll see some of the street blocking tactics as well as several instances of individuals throwing items onto a freeway from an overpass.

Both the audio and video have been edited for content and brevity. What follows is the seven minute interview/video and a complete transcript of Brandon's comments as they appear in the clip:

Niall Ferguson on Why Barack Obama Needs to Go - Newsweek and The Daily Beast

Why does Paul Ryan scare the president so much? Because Obama has broken his promises, and it’s clear that the GOP ticket’s path to prosperity is our only hope.

I was a good loser four years ago. “In the grand scheme of history,” I wrote the day after Barack Obama’s election as president, “four decades is not an especially long time. Yet in that brief period America has gone from the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. to the apotheosis of Barack Obama. You would not be human if you failed to acknowledge this as a cause for great rejoicing.”

Newsweek

Despite having been—full disclosure—an adviser to John McCain, I acknowledged his opponent’s remarkable qualities: his soaring oratory, his cool, hard-to-ruffle temperament, and his near faultless campaign organization.

Yet the question confronting the country nearly four years later is not who was the better candidate four years ago. It is whether the winner has delivered on his promises. And the sad truth is that he has not.

In his inaugural address, Obama promised “not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth.” He promised to “build the roads and bridges, the electric grids, and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.” He promised to “restore science to its rightful place and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost.” And he promised to “transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age.” Unfortunately the president’s scorecard on every single one of those bold pledges is pitiful.

Free Syrian Army claims control of two-thirds of Aleppo, regime denies

Syria’s opposition fighters control almost two thirds of the northern city of Aleppo, a top Free Syrian Army commander said on Tuesday, in a claim denied by a security source in Damascus.
“We now control more than 60 percent of the city of Aleppo, and each day we take control of new districts,” Colonel Abdel Jabbar al-Okaidi told AFP news agency by telephone. His claims could not immediately be verified.

“Every time we seize an area, the army responds with shelling,” Okaidi said.

“This is completely false,” the security source told AFP. “The terrorists are not advancing, it is the army that is making slow progress. Terrorist groups occasionally come out of districts under their control and attack other districts to be able to then claim they have this or that street under their control.”

Bernard-Henri Levy: Stop Assad’s Slaughter in Syria! - Newsweek and The Daily Beast

End the Syria Slaughter Now!

In a personal plea, French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy argues that it’s time for the world to drop its excuses, follow the Libyan example, and act to end Syria's war.

The Syrian tragedy—the irrevocable madness that has taken hold of Bashar al-Assad, the unending agony of Syria’s civilians targeted by his guns—raises all sorts of questions that the heat of summer must not prevent us from asking. After all, dictators don’t take vacations.

BBC News - Egyptian revolution 'failing to deliver for women'

Women protest against Hosni Mubarak government in Egypt (File)
Egyptian women stood on an equal footing with men to demand freedom

Nisreen was young, brave and full of hope for the new Egypt she was in the process of creating.

It was 6 February 2011 and she, like hundreds of other women, was sleeping in Tahrir Square to physically protect it from the Mubarak-government forces trying to take it back.

Nisreen told me that day she believed that after the uprising things had changed for women in Egypt. She felt safe in the square she told me because "There is no harassment".

So she was ready to stay "one day, one week, one month, one year" to topple the regime. She didn't have to wait that long for President Hosni Mubarak to go.

His regime was already crumbling. But her hopes, shared by many others, that things had changed for women would be brutally disappointed.

The Syrian Rebels’ Libyan Weapon | Libyan Tweep Forum

Meet the Irish-Libyan commander giving Bashar al-Assad nightmares.
BY MARY FITZGERALD | AUGUST 9, 2012 (Foreign policy)
IDLIB, Syria —

In a dusty schoolyard somewhere in Idlib province, several hundred men form neat rows before standing to attention.

“Who are we?” bellows one man at the front. “Liwa al-Ummah!” the men reply in unison, pumping their guns in the air. They look different from your average Syrian rebel fighter, typically dressed in a scruffy mismatch of military fatigues and civilian clothes. Most of these men are decked out in identical fatigues, boots, and khaki-colored T-shirts. A handful sport dazzling white T-shirts emblazoned with the Liwa al-Ummah crest: a raised fist set against the tri-starred green, white, and black flag adopted by the Syrian rebels.

“Revolutionaries of Sham,” it reads, using the Arabic term for historical greater Syria, above the name Liwa al-Ummah.

Sitting in an empty classroom flanked by several Syrian and Libyan fighters, a soft-spoken Libyan-born Irish citizen named Mahdi al-Harati explains how he came to be the leader of Liwa al-Ummah.

The brigade emerged, he says, after several Syrians, aware of his experience as commander of the Tripoli Brigade during the Libyan revolution, approached him about founding a similar outfit in Syria.
The Tripoli Brigade was one of the first rebel units into the Libyan capital in August 2011. Its fighters, who included many Libyan expatriates, had received training from Qatari special forces in Nalut, a town in Libya’s western mountains. After the fall of Tripoli, during which he participated in the battle for Muammar al-Qaddafi’s Bab al-Aziziya compound, Harati was appointed deputy head of the Tripoli Military Council (TMC), serving under Abdel Hakim Belhaj, former leader of the now-defunct Libyan Islamic Fighting Group.

Last autumn Harati stepped down as commander of the brigade and as TMC deputy. He made his first trip to Syria shortly afterward for what he says was initially humanitarian work in the country’s northern borderlands. The idea for Liwa al-Ummah came this year.

Senate passes KONY 2012 resolution and earmarks funds to help detect LRA

Members of the US Senate continue to press for action to see LRA atrocities ended. Last week, a Senate resolution that shared the goals of the KONY 2012 campaign passed unanimously, with 47 Senators adding their names as official cosponsors.

In a press release, Senator Chris Coons (D-DE), the lead sponsor of the resolution and Chair of the Africa Subcommittee, commented, “Kony and the LRA have terrorized Uganda and its neighbors in central Africa for more than two decades, tearing families apart and destroying communities… I applaud my colleagues for unanimously passing this bipartisan resolution condemning the crimes committed by the LRA and supporting ongoing regional efforts to bring Kony and top LRA commanders to justice once and for all.”

The lead Republican sponsor, Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK), added, “This resolution reinforces my important legislation that we passed in 2011 called the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act… Bringing Kony and the LRA to an end will remove a major destabilizing force while providing better security for the people of Africa.”

Sinaloa Cartel Operative Jesus Vincente Zambada Niebla Makes Explosive Allegation About Operation ‘Fast and Furious’ | TheBlaze.com

A high-ranking Mexican drug cartel operative currently in U.S. custody is making startling allegations that the failed federal gun-walking operation known as “Fast and Furious” isn’t what you think it is.

It wasn’t about tracking guns, it was about supplying them — all part of an elaborate agreement between the U.S. government and Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa Cartel to take down rival cartels.
The explosive allegations are being made by Jesus Vicente Zambada-Niebla, known as the Sinaloa Cartel’s “logistics coordinator.” He was extradited to the Chicago last year to face federal drug charges.

Sinaloa Cartel Operative Jesus Vincente Zambada Niebla Makes Explosive Allegation About Operation Fast and Furious
Jesus Vicente Zambada- Niebla (Source: MSNBC)
Zambada-Niebla claims that under a “divide and conquer” strategy, the U.S. helped finance and arm the Sinaloa Cartel through Operation Fast and Furious in exchange for information that allowed the DEA, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies to take down rival drug cartels. The Sinaloa Cartel was allegedly permitted to traffic massive amounts of drugs across the U.S. border from 2004 to 2009 — during both Fast and Furious and Bush-era gunrunning operations — as long as the intel kept coming.

This pending court case against Zambada-Niebla is being closely monitored by some members of Congress, who expect potential legal ramifications if any of his claims are substantiated. The trial was delayed but is now scheduled to begin on Oct. 9.

Zambada-Niebla is reportedly a close associate of Sinaloa Cartel kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and the son of Ismael “Mayo” Zambada-Garcia, both of which remain fugitives, likely because of the deal made with the DEA, federal court documents allege.

Libya in transition: National assembly picks Gadhafi foe Magarief as president - World News

TRIPOLI -- Libya's ruling national assembly picked Mohammed Magarief, leader of the National Front party, as its president on Thursday in a vote carried out a day after it took power from the outgoing National Transitional Council.

Magarief, a long-time opponent of ousted leader Moammar Gadhafi, will head the 200-member congress, which will name a prime minister, pass laws and steer Libya to full parliamentary elections after a new constitution is drafted next year.

Libya’s transitional council hands over power

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) – Libya’s National Transitional Council handed over power Wednesday to the General National Congress, the national assembly formed by last month’s elections.

The ceremony in Tripoli marked the first peaceful government transition in Libya in the more than four decades since Moammar Gadhafi seized power in 1969, and was held on the 20th day of Ramadan, which the NTC chose to mark the anniversary of the start of the liberation of the capital city from Gadhafi’s grip.

Security is a major challenge for the country, with militias continuing to operate without government oversight, holding thousands of detainees and carrying out arbitrary detentions.

For example, unknown individuals attacked the residence of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Misrata on Sunday. None of the seven staff members inside the building at the time of the attack was hurt, but the building suffered extensive damage, the ICRC said in a statement.

Abdullah Senussi to stand trial in Mauritania before any extradition

By Hadi Fornaji

 Tripoli, 6 August

Mauritania’s president has said that Abdullah Al-Senussi, Qaddafi’s brother-in-law and former head of intelligence, must face charges of illegal entry before any extradition can be considered.

After several false reports of his whereabouts and even death, Senussi was arrested in March at Mauritania’s Nouakchott airport. He has been charged with using false documents and illegal entry into the country and will now stand trial there.

“Senussi has problems with Mauritania’s judiciary and has to face court for entering Mauritania under a false identity” said President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz during a local forum in the Mauritanian town of Atar, according to AFP. He added: “The passport Senussi used to enter Mauritania was not falsified, but it presents him as Malian and under a fake name, which is why he must undergo trial in Mauritania.”

AN UGLY SITUATION IN HAITI: Massacre in Seguin! Police Kill Unarmed Peasants in Another Controversial Eviction

Massacre in Seguin! Police Kill Unarmed Peasants in Another Controversial Eviction

Syria files reveal regime espionage - Features - Al Jazeera English

Osman al-Osman shows Anita McNaught secret files salvaged from intelligence headquarters [Al Jazeera]

In the ransacked and burnt-out remains of various security headquarters in al-Bab lie many clues to the means used by Bashar al-Assad's government to stay in power, revealing why life under the regime had become increasingly intolerable for its citizens.

In the widely-hated building of military security, the formerly locked cupboards containing files on the town's "suspect” citizens and how to "manage" them are now all emptied of their contents. The caretaker there, a man who used to work in the Post Office and telephone exchange that is located on the ground floor - probably to faciliate alleged routine phone tapings - told us that some Free Syrian Army fighters had taken the files and burnt them.

But in the office of Political Security, the situation is different. There, the cupboards are still stuffed with manila files and brown envelopes containing years of records documenting government-condoned snooping.

Mostly handwritten, the files are the fruits of an East German style surveillance state. In Syria, it is believed that one third of the adult male population was in one way or another working for the government as "intelligence” agents. Informants were vetted for their loyalty to the regime, either because they were card-carrying members of the Ba'ath Party, or they proved themselves "helpful" by carrying out acts for the security services.

Many of the documents have the same format: So-and-so "is a good man because he told us" such-and-such. So-and-so "can be relied upon to provide us with information".
